Hello Friends and family and those that just stop by!
I hope that you are having a safe Holiday weekend. Labor Day weekend is one that we usually spend lounging on the boat in the middle of the lake but this year we have soccer tournaments. Even if we didn't have a tournament, I just don't think we would be enjoying the lake. For me personally, it seems so selfish to enjoy ourselves anywhere, doing anything when I turn on my television and see the utter despair and devastation that is part of our nation. The images are so so haunting and frightening. Really that could be any of us if faced with a disaster of that magnitude. We live on the New Madrid fault line and we don't give that much thought daily but I can imagine that the people along the gulf coast never really gave much thought to the kind of destruction that they are facing either. I held Lilli and cried tonight as I saw a mother, helpless to feed her children, the little girl wanted a drink of water and the reporter handed over a bottle. When he asked her what she wanted, she just simply said a drink of water............... If you asked my kids right now what they wanted, their first thought would be a DVD or a trip to McDonalds. She was about three and ALL she wanted was water.....I can't imagine the despair, as a mother I would fight and claw to save and protect my babies and know that these women are trying desperately to.
The response from the citizens of this nation is wonderful. The donations are pouring in, the state of TX and several others are opening their borders to the victims, giving them shelter, food, schools and jobs. I'm angered about the response from our govt, it should have been so much more and so much sooner. There was ample warning that the hurricane was of at least a level 4 magnitude and there was knowledge that New Orleans could not withstand such a storm. Why were disaster plans not enacted at that moment, why was the national guard not dispatched. There was no shred of hope that this storm would die out, it was coming and it was coming hard. I heard report that public transportation ceased at least a day before the storm hit. The people that had the least amount of ability to evacuate were left to fend for themselves. This simply just should not have happened in the most powerful nation on the planet. Now is not a time for finger pointing but that day will come and I hope that lessons will be learned from this, to prevent it from ever happening anywhere else.
I hope that all of you have felt the need to do something to help, it could have been anyone of us that was a victim. Give a dollar if a dollar is all you have, give your time, donate blood, box up stuff you really don't need and someone who has nothing could use. Kurt and I have made a cash donation and am going to go thru the boxes of garage sale stuff I have stored. They said that they can't use anything winter so I will seperate that and am going to send what can be used down. I know that some churches in a larger neighboring city are taking truckloads of things down to be distributed. I urge you to look thru your things, we all have more than we need.....call local churches and send a care package that might change someone's life. They say that formula and diapers are also desperately needed.
It is gut wrenching to see what some people can be reduced to. People are stealing for personal gain, I'm ok with the ones taking food, water, formula, diapers and so forth but there are those stealing guns, alcohol, TV' and other non life maintaining things, they need to know that even in a time like this THEFT is a CRIME and HURTS someone.......people are shooting each other, they are raping children and there was report that two infants had their throats slit over night at the dome the other night. It takes all kinds of people to make our world go around and there are many faces of evil. I know evil people, but I never imagined the magnitude that could be reached by others. So please pray, to whatever God you pray to. Pray for healing and peace, pray for guidance for those that are leading the efforts, pray for the safety of the volunteers and pray for the well being and healing of all of those affected.
With the evilness in our world in mind, I will leave you with a quote from the "Good Book":
Love your enemies, bless those that curse you, do good to those
that hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and
persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:44-45
Whatever face the evil you see takes, especially the evil that has transpired in New Orleans, pray forgiveness. Forgiveness doesn't make what that person has done right or wrong, or justify it. It just releases them into God's hands so that he can deal with them.
Goodnight!
